Jeans are a very popular type of trousers worn all over the world.

Most people recognize them as blue jeans made from a heavy cloth called denim. This fabric is very strong and lasts a long time. For a long time, people used jeans as workwear for tough jobs. Miners, farmers, and cattlemen needed clothes that could handle hard labor. Today, they are a staple of fashion for many different people.

Making denim involves a special way of dyeing and weaving. Traditionally, makers used indigo dye from plants to turn the cotton blue.

Today, most denim uses synthetic indigo made in labs. To make the pants even stronger, makers add copper rivets. These are small metal bits placed on stress points. They go on pocket corners and the bottom of the button fly. This prevents the fabric from pulling apart during hard work.

The history of these trousers goes back many centuries. Fabric called "jean" first emerged in Genoa, Italy, during the 16th century. In France, weavers created a similar cloth called denim, which means "from Nîmes." Another fabric called dungaree came from a village in India called Dongri. In 1853, Levi Strauss moved to San Francisco to open a business. Later, a tailor named Jacob Davis suggested adding metal rivets for strength. On May 20, 1873, Davis and Strauss received a patent for this idea.

Jeans have changed many times since they were first made. In the late 1870s, Levi Strauss added a small watch pocket. By 1901, the famous five-pocket design became the industry standard. For a long time, men's jeans had a button fly. By the 1960s, most jeans used a zipper instead. Some brands also started making pre-shrunk jeans so they would fit better.

You can find many styles today, like slim, loose, or boot-cut fits.

Jeans moved from the farm to the movie screen in the 1950s. Actors like Marlon Brando and James Dean wore them in films. This made jeans a symbol of rebellion for many teenagers. Later, in the 1960s and 1970s, they became common casual wear for everyone. Some people even like to make new jeans look old. This is done through washing or stone-washing techniques.
