Suspenders are useful straps used to hold up trousers or skirts.

People in North America call them suspenders. In places like Britain, Australia, and New Zealand, they are called braces. These straps go over the shoulders to keep clothes in place. They are often made of woven cloth or leather. Most straps form an X or Y shape across the back.

There are a few ways to attach these straps to clothing. Some suspenders use clips to grip the fabric. Others use buttons that are sewn onto the waistband. High-quality versions might use leather tabs at the ends. They can be made from silk or even rayon. Rayon is a strong, man-made fiber used for webbing. To get a good fit, you measure from the back pant line. Then, you measure across to the opposite shoulder.

Modern braces became popular in 1822. A London shopkeeper named Albert Thurston helped make them a common item for men. His shop in London still exists today. Long ago, people sometimes called them galluses. A famous writer named Samuel Clemens also helped with their history. Most people know him as Mark Twain. He received a United States patent for adjustable straps in 1871.

Suspenders were very common in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. This was because skirts and trousers were cut very high. During this time, men often wore them under a waistcoat. A waistcoat is a type of vest worn over a shirt. People did this to keep the straps hidden. In 1938, a magazine said 60% of American men chose belts instead. This happened because many men began wearing belts after World War I.

Fashion changes often, and suspenders have come in and out of style. They were popular again in the 1940s when trousers became fuller. Today, many professionals like lawyers still wear them. Some famous people, like the newscaster Larry King, were known for wearing them. They are also used in punk and skinhead fashion. In the 1960s and 1980s, some women made them a fashion statement too. Singer Annie Lennox even wore them with dark suits.
