A garter is a narrow band of fabric used to hold up stockings.

It is a simple tool that serves a very important job. By wrapping around the leg, it keeps long stockings from slipping down. In the past, people often tied them just below the knee. This was the slimmest part of the leg and worked well. Today, many people wear them for fashion rather than just for work.

Even though elastic makes them less necessary, they remain a popular style.

There are many ways to wear and use these bands. Some people use a garter belt, which is also called suspenders.

This belt sits at the waist or just below it. It has elastic straps that hang down on each side. These straps have metal clips at the ends to grab the stockings. A small rubber disc inside the clip helps lock everything in place. This setup keeps the stockings tight against the leg. Some people even use these for medical reasons, like helping with blood flow.

History shows that garters have changed a lot over time. In the 1700s, they could be very fancy and decorated.

People sometimes embroidered names, dates, or funny phrases on them. Before elastic was invented, they used buckles or metal springs to stay on. In 1888, a woman named Bertha Benz used a garter for a very different job. She used it to insulate a broken wire on her car. This happened during the first long-distance car journey by automobile.

Garters are also part of many special celebrations and traditions. At weddings, a bride might wear a special garter during the ceremony.

The groom may remove it and toss it to the unmarried men. Some people believe catching it brings good luck for marriage. At high school proms in America, young women often wear them too.

These often match the color of their prom dresses. They might even give the garter to their date as a souvenir.

You can see the influence of garters in many different places. In sports, ice hockey players use them to hold up thick socks.

This stops the wool socks from rolling down to their ankles. In England, the Order of the Garter is a very famous group. King Edward III started this high honor for knights in 1348. It is the oldest and highest order of chivalry in Britain. Even though it is an old tradition, the name lives on today.
