In many cultures, a girdle is a long rope or a fabric band. It can be a practical tool for daily life. It can also be a sacred object used in prayer. Sometimes, a girdle is even a symbol of great power in old stories. People value them for their usefulness and their deep meaning.

There are many ways to wear and use a girdle. In the Christian Church, a priest might wear a white linen rope. This rope is often about 12 feet and 6 inches long. He can tie it in a special way to hold his robes.

Some monks even hang their books, like the Bible, from their girdles. In Judaism, men may wear a belt called a gartel during prayer. This belt is usually black or white. It creates a physical divide between the upper and lower body to help a person focus on God.

History shows that girdles have been around since ancient times. The Greeks and Romans used them to hold up tunics. Since they did not have pockets, they used girdles to carry their purses.

In the Anglo-Saxon era, both men and women used them. Men used a girdle to support their swords. Some of these were made of white leather. By the 8th century, the girdle became a formal part of Christian clothing. Metal versions were even made by special workers called girdlers.

Many famous names and places are linked to the girdle. In Greek myths, the hero Hercules had to find the girdle of Hippolyta.

In modern times, the word is used in American sports. Football players wear a girdle under their pants. This helps keep their protective pads in the right place.
