Most belts are made of leather because it is strong and light. This material can be bent or folded without breaking easily. Other belts use plastic, heavy cloth, or even rope. You can use a buckle to turn the strap into a loop.

This secures one end to the other part of the belt. Some belts use a knot instead of a buckle. Many belts also have a small loop called a keeper. This keeper loop stops the loose end from flapping around.

Belts help people in many different ways. They can hold up clothing like trousers, shorts, or skirts. They can also carry useful objects like tools or weapons. People often attach pouches, such as coin purses, to their belts. On dresses or robes, a belt might not hold the clothes up. Instead, it can be used to define or accentuate the waist.

Some wide belts are even called waist cinchers. These can look similar to corsets. They help shape the body by pressing against the torso.

Humans have used belts for a very long time. Men have been documented wearing them since the Bronze Age.

In the western world, belts were often more common for men. However, fashion trends change over time. In the late 19th century, belts were part of military uniforms. Officers in Prussia and Russia wore wide belts on the outside of their uniforms. These belts helped support a saber. They also helped the wearer look more trim and impressive.

Belts change based on how they are used. Formal dress belts are usually quite narrow. They are often between 28 and 32 millimeters wide. These belts might have a shiny finish or polished metal buckles.

Casual belts for denim are usually wider. They are typically between 35 and 42 millimeters wide. These often have a textured look and thicker stitching. Some people also use belts as fashion accessories. For example, fans of punk rock often wear black leather belts with metal studs.

Belts are a part of many different cultures and styles. In the 1920s, men began wearing them more often as trouser waists moved lower. Some groups, like the bikers of the 1950s, used studded leather for a tough look. This style influenced many music subcultures later on. Even in the military, belts can show discipline and fitness.
