A belt is a flexible band or strap designed to be worn around the natural waist or the hips.

Most belts are constructed from durable materials like leather, plastic, or heavy cloth. Leather is the most popular choice because it is both strong and light. It can withstand being bent, folded, or tightened without sustaining damage. Over time, genuine leather belts often adapt to the specific shape of the wearer. Beyond simple utility, belts serve as tools to secure clothing, carry objects, or define the human silhouette.

To function, a belt typically forms a loop around the body. This is often achieved using a buckle to secure one end of the strap to another part of the belt. Some people choose to use a knot instead of a mechanical buckle. Many belts include a "keeper loop," which is a small loop of material affixed near the buckle. This keeper prevents the free end of the belt from flapping around once it is fastened.

Some belts also feature an end tip made of metal or leather to protect the strap from damage.

Belts serve several distinct purposes depending on the garment they accompany. For trousers, shorts, or skirts, belts use friction and compression to hold the clothing up. They take advantage of the narrow circumference of the torso above the hips. In contrast, belts worn on dresses, robes, or gowns may not hold the garment up at all. These garments stay in place through shoulder support or friction against the torso. In these cases, the belt acts as a fashion accessory to accentuate the waist. Wide belts known as waist cinchers can even overlap in function with corsets to shape the body.

The history of the belt spans thousands of years. Documentation shows that men have worn belts since the Bronze Age. In Western history, belts were frequently associated with men, though fashion trends have shifted this over time. During the late 19th century and until the First World War, belts were essential decorative and utilitarian parts of military uniforms. Officers in nations like Prussia and Tsarist Russia often wore wide belts on the outside of their uniforms. These belts supported weapons like sabers and helped create a trim, impressive physique by cinching the waist.

Significant shifts in belt usage occurred in the 20th century. In the 1920s, men began wearing belts more frequently as trouser waists moved to a lower line. This was a major change because, prior to this era, many trousers did not even feature belt loops. In modern military contexts, belts are used to convey discipline. For example, the US military often requires belts to be worn snugly during inspections to show fitness. However, since 1989, standards have been relaxed to prevent the negative effects of excessive abdominal constriction.

Belts also vary greatly in terms of formality and style. Formal dress belts are typically narrow, measuring between 28 and 32 millimeters wide. These often feature high-shine finishes, such as spazzalato leather, and polished metal buckles. Casual belts, often worn with denim, are wider, usually between 35 and 42 millimeters. These are built for strength with thicker stitching and textured appearances. People also use belts to carry items by attaching pouches like coin purses, holsters, or scabbards directly to the strap.

Subcultures have also used belts to express specific identities. In the 1950s, bikers used studded leather to create an intimidating appearance. This style influenced various groups, including the Greasers in the United States and the Rocker subculture in the United Kingdom. Later, in the 1970s, punk rockers adopted studded belts as part of their aesthetic. The metal studs eventually evolved into many shapes, such as pyramid or elongated designs. Today, these styles continue to be worn by various groups, including heavy metal fans and emo enthusiasts.
