One night, some fine dishes got chipped while being washed by hand. Josephine wanted a better way to clean them. She also wanted to help people who were tired from washing dishes.

She built her first machine in a shed. She made wire bins to hold plates and cups. These bins sat on a wheel inside a copper boiler. A motor turned the wheel. Hot, soapy water sprayed up from the bottom. This used water pressure to clean the dishes. This was better than using scrubbers.

Josephine got a patent, which is a legal paper for an invention, in 1886. Her machine was a big success at a fair in Chicago in 1893. She won a prize for her work. Many hotels and restaurants bought her machines. Most homes did not use them yet. They were too expensive and needed much hot water. Her company later became part of KitchenAid. In 2006, she joined the National Inventors Hall of Fame.
