One day, some of her fine dishes got chipped. She wanted a better way to wash them. She also wanted to help people who were tired of washing by hand.

She built her first machine in a shed.

She made wire bins to hold plates and cups. Hot, soapy water sprayed up from the bottom. This water cleaned the dishes with pressure.

Her machine was a big success. Many hotels and restaurants bought them. She even won a prize for her work. Josephine is now in a hall for great inventors.
