A dishwasher is a machine that cleans dishes automatically.

It does not scrub by hand. Instead, it sprays hot water on the dishes. It also uses a soap called detergent.

The machine follows a set of steps. First, it may rinse the dishes. Then, it pumps a mix of water and soap to rotating sprayers. These sprayers spin to clean everything. The machine often recycles the water to save energy. After the wash, it drains the water. It then brings in fresh water for a rinse. Finally, it dries the dishes. Some machines use a rinse-aid. This is a chemical that helps water slide off easily. This stops water spots from forming.

Some dishwashers are very smart. They have soil sensors. These sensors look for bits of food in the water. If the water is clean, the machine stops early. This saves water and power.

Large restaurants use bigger machines. These are called industrial dishwashers. They can clean many plates every hour.
