Small appliances are easy to move. You might use a toaster or a blender.

Some machines are for fun. We call these consumer electronics, or brown goods. These include TVs and computers.

Self-contained electric appliances became popular in America in the early 1900s. People wanted to spend less time on chores. This gave them more time to play. In 1903, Earl Richardson made a small electric iron. This helped the industry grow.

Today, some machines can talk to each other. This is called home automation. A washing machine might tell a dryer when it is done. This helps the laundry move quickly. When machines break, we can recycle them. People take them apart to use the parts again.

This helps the Earth.
