A clothes dryer is a machine that removes water from fabric. Most people use them after a wash.

A common type is the tumble dryer. It uses a rotating drum called a tumbler. This drum turns to keep air moving between the clothes. The machine pulls in air and heats it up. This hot air turns water into vapor. The machine then vents this humid air outside.

Some machines do not vent air outside. These are called condenser dryers. They use a heat exchanger to cool the air. This turns the water vapor into liquid. The liquid goes into a tank or a drain. Heat pump dryers are even better for saving power. They use a heat pump to recycle heat. This uses much less energy than other types.

It is important to keep the vents clean. Lint can build up in the hoses. A blocked vent makes the dryer work harder. It can even make the machine too hot.

Dryers can also help with pests. Using heat for thirty minutes can kill tiny bugs like dust mites.
