A refrigerator is a tool that keeps food fresh.

It works by moving heat from the inside to the outside. This makes the inside much colder than the room. This cold temperature helps food last longer. It slows down how fast bacteria can grow.

Most fridges use a vapor compression cycle. This is a set of steps that uses a gas to move heat. In 1834, Jacob Perkins built the first working system like this. Later, Carl von Linde made a very reliable version.

Before electric fridges, people used iceboxes. These were boxes filled with real ice. In 1913, the first electric fridges for homes were invented. One early model was called the DOMELRE.

By 1927, a famous model called the "Monitor-Top" was made. It had a part on top that looked like a ship turret.

Today, many fridges have a freezer too. A freezer stays below the freezing point of water. This lets people store frozen foods for a long time. Some new fridges even have ice makers in the door.
