A refrigerator is a very helpful machine for any home.

It is an appliance that keeps food fresh for a long time. Inside, it has a special compartment that stays cold. This coldness is much lower than the temperature in your room. This works because low temperatures slow down how bacteria grow.

When bacteria grow more slowly, food stays good for longer. Most fridges keep the inside just a few degrees above freezing. A freezer is a part of the fridge that stays below freezing. This allows you to keep foods frozen for a long time.

Most fridges work using a vapor compression cycle.

This is a way of moving heat from one place to another. A special liquid or gas moves through the system. It picks up heat from the inside of the fridge. Then, it carries that heat to the outside environment. This process makes the inside of the machine much colder.

This cycle is the same technology used in many air conditioners. Newer models might even have dispensers for ice or chilled water. Some very small ones are made just to chill drinks.

People have found ways to stay cool for a very long time.

Ancient Iranians used special structures called yakhchāls to keep things cool. Before electric fridges, families used iceboxes filled with real ice. In 1755, a professor named William Cullen made a small cooling machine. Later, in 1834, Jacob Perkins built the first working vapor-compression system. In 1854, the first machine that made ice for stores was invented. By 1913, the first electric refrigerators for homes were being made. One early model was even called the DOMELRE.

Many famous inventors helped make the modern fridge possible.

In 1923, a company called Frigidaire made the first self-contained unit. In 1927, General Electric released the "Monitor-Top" refrigerator. It was named after a ship because it had a part on top. This model was very popular and over a million were made. In the 1920s, a gas called Freon was introduced to make fridges safer. Today, the FDA says fridges should stay at 40°F or below. Freezers should be kept at 0°F to keep food safe.

Modern refrigerators are a big part of how we eat today.

They come in many different sizes for different homes. Some are built right into the kitchen walls. Others stand alone in the corner of the room. Because of freezers, people can buy a lot of food at once. They can keep frozen food in bulk and eat it later. This makes it much easier to keep a kitchen full of food. It is a wonderful tool that changed how every household works.
