Washing machine

technology Maturity 7-9 Next article →

A washing machine is a clever tool used to clean clothing.

Most of these machines use water and laundry detergent to work. You can add detergent in liquid, powder, or sheet form. These machines are found in homes or in public laundromats. In a laundromat, people pay to use the machines.

This invention is very important to history. Some people say it is one of the greatest inventions ever made.

Before these machines, washing clothes was a very hard job.

People had to carry water from a pump or a well. They had to heat that water over a fire. Then, they would soak, scrub, and rinse the clothes by hand. This whole process often took an entire day of work. After washing, people still had to dry and iron everything. They even had to twist wet clothes by hand to squeeze out water.

Early machines helped make this work much faster.

Some used wooden tubs with paddles to rub the clothes. Other designs used a rotating drum that a person turned by hand. Later, inventors used steam power to make the machines work. In 1862, Richard Lansdale showed a machine with rollers for wringing clothes. In 1937, the first automatic washing machine was introduced.

Many different people helped invent these machines over many years.

The first English patent for a washing machine was issued in 1691. In 1797, Nathaniel Briggs received a patent for clothes washing in the United States. By 1928, people in the U.S. were buying 800,000 electric washing machines. In 1940, 60% of homes with electricity in the U.S. had a washer. Later, engineers like Winston L. Shelton helped create better timers. These timers use small motors to tell the machine when to start different steps.

Today, washing machines are a normal part of life.

They connect to water pipes in your house to get water. Some machines use electric heaters to make the water warm. They use a timer to follow a set path of cleaning. This path includes washing, rinsing, and spinning the clothes. Because of these machines, cleaning clothes is now a quick and easy task.
