It is also called a utility room in British English. The word utility means something is useful or practical. This room helps keep a home very tidy. People use it to wash and dry their clothes. It is a very helpful part of a modern house.

Many tools live inside this room to help with chores. You might find an automatic washing machine and a clothes dryer. There is often a large sink called a laundry tub. People use this tub to hand-wash delicate items like sweaters. You may also see an ironing board for smoothing clothes. Some rooms even have a small sewing machine or storage cabinets. Countertops are often there to give you a place to fold clothes.

These rooms have a long and interesting history. Long ago in England, people used a scullery room for kitchen items. By the 14th century, this was a household department for kitchen care. The term utility room appeared in 1760 in a United Kingdom cottage. In 1944, a Scottish report suggested utility rooms for new homes. These rooms could be used for washing clothes or cleaning boots. By 1949, an American paper said they were becoming very popular.

Different places around the world use these rooms in unique ways. In Sweden, apartment buildings often have a room called a tvättstuga. These are usually in the basement or a separate building. In Hungary, some people share a communal washing kitchen. In the 1980s, Swedish rooms used boards to book washing times. Now, many of those use electronic keys or tokens instead. Some old Hungarian laundry rooms are now used as small shops.

Where you find a laundry room depends on the home. Older homes often keep the laundry in the basement. Modern homes might put it on the main floor near the kitchen. Sometimes the room is right next to the garage. This can act as a mudroom to help people enter the house. It might also hold a furnace or a water heater. This keeps the rest of the house from getting too crowded.
