This hand-powered agitation was more effective than scrubbing by hand alone. Eventually, the rotating drum design emerged as a major milestone. These early drums were made of wood and required a person to turn a hand-crank. As metal replaced wood, drums could be placed over fires to heat the water.

In 1862, Richard Lansdale demonstrated a compound rotary machine with wringing rollers. Canadian inventor John E. Turnbull patented a washer with wringer rolls in 1843. During the 1850s, the Shaker community also contributed to the technology through inventors like Nicholas Bennett and David Parker.

Electricity changed how machines functioned and how many people owned them. Electric washing machines were being discussed in newspapers as early as 1904. In the United States, sales of electric units reached 800,000 by 1928. However, the Great Depression caused sales to drop to 600,000 units by 1932. By 1940, 60% of the 25,000,000 electrically wired homes in the U.S. owned a washer.

During World War II, domestic production in the U.S. was suspended to manufacture war materiel. This period allowed manufacturers to research and develop the automatic machines that would define the future.

The first domestic automatic washing machine was introduced by Bendix Home Appliances in 1937.

This machine looked similar to modern front-loading models. It used a heavy-duty two-speed gearbox to change drum speeds, much like a car's transmission. Early automatic models often used temporary slip-on connectors for sink taps. Today, most machines use permanent hot and cold water connections. Many modern European front-loading machines use a "cold fill" method. These machines rely on internal electric heaters to raise the water temperature.

Modern machines rely on electromechanical timers to sequence the wash and extraction process. These timers use a series of cams on a common shaft. A small electric motor drives the shaft through a reduction gearbox. As the motor runs, the cams hit switches to start or stop parts like the drain pump. In 1957, engineers Winston L. Shelton and Gresham N. Jennings patented an early version of this device. Some older machines also used a "Keymatic" system. This used plastic cartridges with specific slots to program different wash cycles.
