These tools assist with cooking, cleaning, and keeping food fresh. People often call them domestic or electric appliances. There are many different kinds of these machines. Some are very large, while others are quite small. They make many household tasks much easier to finish.

We can group these machines into a few main categories. Major appliances are often called white goods. This name comes from the fact that they were often painted white. These include items like refrigerators, washing machines, and dishwashers.

Small appliances are much easier to carry and move. You might use a toaster, a blender, or a coffee maker. There are also consumer electronics, which people sometimes call brown goods. These are used for fun, like watching a TV or using a computer.

Modern appliances began to change in the early 20th century. This was a special American innovation. People wanted to spend less time on chores and more time on hobbies. In 1903, Earl Richardson made a small electric clothes iron. This helped the whole industry start to grow. After World War II, more people bought dishwashers and clothes dryers. By the 1980s, the industry was very large. In America, companies shipped $1.5 billion in goods every year during that time.

Rules were made to help these machines use less power. In 1987, the US passed the National Appliance Energy Conservation Act. This law required companies to cut energy use by 25% every five years. By the 1990s, the market was controlled by only five big companies. In 1991, General Electric held 40% of the dishwasher market. Whirlpool held 31%, and Electrolux held 20%. Maytag had 7%, while Thermador had 2%.

Today, many machines are becoming much smarter through home automation. This means machines can connect to the internet. A washing machine might talk to a dryer to coordinate their work. This helps wet clothes move to the dryer more quickly. When these machines get too old or break, we can recycle them. Workers dismantle them to recover useful materials. This process includes shredding and sorting parts for reuse.
