Refrigeration is a way to make a space or object cold. It works by removing heat from a cool place and moving it to a warmer place. This is a human-made method of cooling. We use it in many ways today. You might see it in a home refrigerator or a large industrial freezer. It is also used in air conditioning to keep buildings comfortable.

How does this heat move? The process usually moves energy from a low-temperature area to a high-temperature area. This can happen using machines that run on electricity or magnetism. Some systems even use lasers to move heat. One common way is called vapor-compression. This uses a special liquid that changes form to carry heat away.

People have tried to stay cool for a very long time. Ancient people used snow and ice in pits to cool drinks. The Persians used a pit called a Yakhchal to store ice. In the 1800s, people harvested ice from frozen lakes using saws. A man named Frederic Tudor built icehouses in places like Havana. He helped make ice a common thing people could buy.

Scientists also worked hard to invent better machines. In 1755, William Cullen used a pump to create a small amount of ice. Later, in 1834, Jacob Perkins built the first working vapor-compression system. This system could run continuously without wasting its fluids. In 1856, James Harrison built a machine that could make ice for businesses. He used it for places like breweries and meat-packing houses.

These inventions changed how the whole world works. Refrigerated rail cars allowed food to travel long distances. This helped people build large cities in hot places like Las Vegas, Nevada. Without these machines, cities like Houston, Texas, might not have grown so much. Today, supermarkets rely on refrigeration to keep our food fresh. This helps us get many different foods from farms far away.
