In 1805, Oliver Evans described this closed cycle using ether under a vacuum. Later, in 1834, Jacob Perkins built the first working system of this type. His design allowed the fluid to be constantly condensed and reused without waste.

Another method is gas absorption refrigeration. Ferdinand Carré developed the first system of this type in 1859. This system used gaseous ammonia dissolved in water, known as aqua ammonia. In the 1860s and 1870s, Carl von Linde improved the process of liquefying gases. He did this to help brewers produce lager on a large scale all year. His work allowed for the use of refrigerants like sulfur dioxide and methyl chloride.
