At that factory, they used a hoist to lift heavy tools. A hoist is a machine that lifts things up. This was not safe. If the rope broke, the tools would fall.

Otis made a new way to stay safe. He invented a safety device for elevators. This device stops the lift if the rope breaks. In 1854, he showed his invention to many people. This helped more people want his safe elevators. In 1857, he put the first passenger elevator in a New York City store.

Otis also made other things. He made a steam plow and a special oven. He even worked on a steam engine with his son, Charles. Otis died in 1861 at age 49. He started the Otis Elevator Company. This company became very big.
