He changed how we move in tall buildings. Before his invention, elevators were quite dangerous. People were afraid to use them. This was because they relied on a single rope. If that rope broke, the lift would fall. Otis created a way to make these lifts safe for people. This made it possible to build much taller buildings.

His safety device works in a very smart way. He worked at a bedstead factory in Yonkers, New York. The factory used a hoist to lift heavy gear. This hoist used a hoisting rope to pull things up. Otis saw that a broken rope was a big problem. He invented a safety elevator that stops automatically. If the hoisting rope breaks, the device holds the lift in place. This prevents the elevator from falling to the ground.

Otis had many different jobs before his big success. He was born on August 3, 1811, in Halifax, Vermont. He once worked as a wagon driver in Troy, New York. Later, he tried to run a gristmill and a sawmill. He also built wagons and carriages. In 1845, he moved to Albany to work as a mechanic. He even invented a safety brake for a railway. These many jobs helped him learn how machines work.

In 1853, Otis invented his famous safety device. He started the Otis Elevator Company the next year. He gave a public demonstration in 1854 at the New York Crystal Palace. This show helped many people trust his invention. On March 23, 1857, he installed a safe elevator for people. It was located in the E. V. Haughwout Building in New York City. Otis also patented a steam plow in 1857. He even made a rotary oven in 1858.

Otis died on April 8, 1861, at age 49. He died from a sickness called diphtheria. His work lives on through his company. An Otis Elevator Company worker even named the "escalator." This is the moving staircase we use today. A ship named the SS Elisha Graves Otis was also built. His ideas helped create the modern cities we see now. We use his ideas every time we ride an elevator.
