George Westinghouse was a famous American inventor and engineer.

He lived during a time of big changes in technology. He was born in 1846 in Central Bridge, New York. His family came from Germany and moved through England to the United States. As a young man, he showed a great talent for machines. He even served in the Union Navy during the Civil War. Later, he worked in his father's machine shop. This early work helped him learn how to build things.

One of his most important inventions changed how trains travel.

Before his invention, stopping a train was a very hard job. Workers had to run along the tops of moving cars to pull brakes by hand. This was dangerous and made it hard to stop quickly. Westinghouse created a system using compressed air to stop the train. He used an air compressor and a pipe that ran the whole length of the train. This allowed the engineer to stop all the cars at the same time. He later improved this so that if a pipe broke, the brakes would turn on automatically.

George Westinghouse also helped create the natural gas industry.

In 1884, his crew struck a pocket of gas while drilling on his estate. This was a very sudden and powerful event. He spent a week finding a way to cap the flow of gas safely. He then worked on ways to send gas to homes for heat and light. By 1887, his company served over 12,000 homes in Pennsylvania. He also made tools to help switch tracks and signal trains safely.

His work with electricity changed the world forever.

He focused on alternating current, or AC electricity. This type of power can travel very long distances. He used a device called a transformer to make this work. A transformer can "step up" the voltage to send power far away. Then, another transformer can "step down" the voltage so it is safe for homes. This was much better than the direct current (DC) used by Thomas Edison. DC could only travel about one mile before losing its strength.

Westinghouse proved his AC system worked on a huge scale.

In 1893, his company lit up the "White City" at the Columbian Exposition in Chicago. In 1895, his company opened a large AC power plant at Niagara Falls, New York. This was the first large-scale plant of its kind in the world. Throughout his life, Westinghouse received 360 patents for his many inventions. He started 61 different companies during his career. Many of these businesses are still around today.
