Thomas Alva Edison was a famous American inventor and businessman.

He changed the modern world with his many devices. His inventions helped with electric power, sound recording, and motion pictures. He was one of the first people to use teamwork for inventing. He built the first industrial research laboratory to help his ideas grow. This lab allowed many researchers to work together on new things.

Edison's inventions often worked by using new ways to handle energy or sound. In 1876, he began making a carbon microphone for telephones. This device used two metal plates with tiny bits of carbon between them. When sound waves hit the plates, they pressed on the carbon. This changed how much electricity could flow through the circuit.

He also made the phonograph in 1877. This machine recorded sound onto a grooved cylinder covered in tinfoil. It was so new that many people thought it was magic.

Edison's journey as an inventor started with his early jobs. He was born in 1847 in Milan, Ohio.

As a young boy, he sold newspapers and candy on trains. At age 15, he saved a child from a runaway train. This brave act led to him training as a telegraph operator. Working with telegraphs helped him learn about electricity and science.

He later moved to New York City to start his own business.

Edison was a very busy man who worked many hours.

He established his famous laboratory in Menlo Park, New Jersey, in 1876.

His lab was huge and held thousands of different materials. It had everything from chemicals to shark teeth and ostrich feathers. Edison held 1,093 US patents for his many different inventions. He used the money he earned to fund even more experiments. He even started a magazine called Science in 1880.

Many things we use today started with ideas from Edison. His work with electricity led to the light bulbs we use at home. His work with sound led to the music players we enjoy.

Even the way scientists work in teams today follows his example. He showed that hard work and many tests lead to success. He famously said that invention was mostly about hard work. He called it "one percent inspiration and 99 percent perspiration."
