He was born in Hanover, Germany, in 1851. His family were merchants, so he learned that trade as a young man. He later moved to the United States in 1870. To pay for his studies, he worked many different jobs. He delivered papers and even cleaned bottles. At night, he studied physics at the Cooper Union Institute. He wanted to understand how the world worked through science.

Berliner is most famous for making the gramophone record.

Before his invention, sound was hard to keep. He created a way to use flat discs to play music. He used a process called electroplating to make many copies of a master disc. These discs were made of zinc and were flat instead of being shaped like cylinders. In 1894, he started the United States Gramophone Company. He raised $25,000 from businessmen to help his company grow. He wanted his records to be more than just small toys.

His life was full of many big discoveries and legal battles.

He invented an improved transmitter for the telephone. This was one of the first types of microphones. However, Thomas Edison also claimed he invented the use of carbon in a transmitter. In 1901, a court decided the patent belonged to Edison. Even so, Berliner continued to invent many new things. He created a new type of loom for making cloth. He also made acoustic tiles for rooms.

Berliner was also very interested in the science of flight.

He worked on early versions of the helicopter. Between 1907 and 1926, he studied how things could fly vertically. He helped develop a lightweight rotary engine for these machines. A rotary engine is a motor where parts turn in a specific way. In 1909, he founded the Gyro Motor Company in Washington, D.C. His son, Henry, also became an expert in making aircraft.

Beyond his machines, Berliner cared about helping people in many ways. He spoke up for women's equality and better public health. In 1908, he started a scholarship called the Sarah Berliner Research Fellowship. This was named to honor his mother. Berliner passed away from a heart attack in 1929. He was 78 years old when he died. He is buried in Rock Creek Cemetery in Washington, D.C.
