Boas lived from 1858 to 1942. He was born in Minden, Germany. His parents were liberal people who valued science and freedom. He grew up in a home that encouraged thinking for oneself. This background helped him become a great researcher.

Boas fought against very unfair ideas. Some people believed that race determined how a person acted. Boas proved this was wrong through his studies. He showed that our environment and health can change our bodies.
