Cultural relativism

language culture Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Cultural relativism is a way of looking at the world. It suggests that we should understand a culture's values within its own context. We should not judge them using the standards of a different culture. This idea says that all points of view can be valid. It also suggests that truth can be relative to a person or their culture.

This concept helps us see why people do things differently. It encourages us to be curious instead of being judgmental.

To practice this, researchers use special methods to learn. One method is called ethnography. This involves living with a group of people for a long time. By doing this, researchers learn the local language. They try to become part of the culture for a while. This helps them understand the meaning behind local beliefs.

Another way is ethnology. This means comparing many different cultures in a fair way. It helps scientists see the wide variety of human life.

This idea began with a thinker named Franz Boas. He was an anthropologist who first wrote about these ideas in 1887. Boas believed that civilization was not absolute. He thought our ideas are only true within our own civilization. He also argued that culture and race are not the same thing.

His students, like Robert Lowie, helped spread his work. The term itself was used by Alain Locke in 1924. It became very common after Boas died in 1942.

There are many interesting facts about how this works. Language is a great example of cultural relativity. Some languages do not have a specific word for the color green. People speaking those languages might use words for blue or yellow instead.

Boas also studied how different languages organize sounds. Some people thought Native American languages were unorganized. Boas showed they actually just had different rules for sounds. This proved that every language has its own logic.

This way of thinking helps us avoid ethnocentrism. Ethnocentrism is when people believe their own culture is the best. It can make people think their own arts or beliefs are the only true ones. Cultural relativism acts as a tool to challenge these views.

It helps us realize that our own ways are not the only ways. By studying others, we learn more about ourselves. It turns the study of people into a way to find enlightenment.
