Willis Carrier was a famous American engineer. He is best known for inventing modern air conditioning.

This invention changed how people live and work. Before his work, summer heat and wet air were hard to manage. His machines helped people stay comfortable in many buildings. He also helped factories work better during hot months. This made his work a very important part of history.

Carrier's first big idea came from a printing problem. In 1902, a printing company in Brooklyn had a hard job. The summer air was very humid. This means the air held a lot of water. The wet air made their paper grow and shrink. This made the printed colors look bad. Carrier built a system to fix this. It did four things: it controlled heat, controlled humidity, moved air, and cleaned the air.

Carrier studied hard to become an expert. He graduated from Buffalo High School in 1897. Then, he went to Cornell University. He earned a Master of Engineering degree there in 1901. After college, he worked for the Buffalo Forge Company. On July 17, 1902, he submitted his first drawings for an air system. In 1906, he got a patent for a spray-type machine. This machine could make air wetter or drier.

Many people helped start his famous company. In 1915, seven young engineers joined together. They used $32,600 of their own savings to start the Carrier Engineering Corporation. These men were Willis Carrier, J. Irvine Lyle, Edward T. Murphy, L. Logan Lewis, Ernest T. Lyle, Frank Sanna, Alfred E. Stacey Jr., and Edmund P. Heckel.

Later, the company merged with others in 1930. It became the Carrier Corporation. Willis Carrier served as the chairman of the board. The company eventually moved to Syracuse, New York, in 1937.

Today, we see his work everywhere. Most homes and businesses use HVAC systems. HVAC stands for heating, ventilation, and air conditioning.

His company is still a world leader in cooling. In 2018, the company had 53,000 employees. They even had sales of $18.6 billion. Carrier's ideas even helped start companies in Japan and Korea. His name lives on at Syracuse University in a special lab. He truly changed the way we feel the air around us.
