Willis Haviland Carrier was a pioneering American engineer. He is most famous for inventing modern air conditioning.

His work changed how humans interact with their environments. Before his inventions, heat and humidity were major obstacles to industry and comfort. Carrier developed systems that could precisely manage the air in a room. This technology is now a vital part of modern life. Today, we call these systems HVAC, which stands for heating, ventilation, and air conditioning.

Carrier's most famous invention began as a solution to a specific industrial problem. In 1902, a printing company in Brooklyn, New York, struggled with air quality. The summer humidity caused their paper to grow and shrink. This was a major issue because color printing required running paper through a press up to four times. If the paper changed size, the colors would not line up correctly. Carrier designed a system to solve this. His 1902 installation was the first modern air conditioning system because it controlled humidity. Experts later agreed that air conditioning must perform four tasks: control temperature, control humidity, circulate air, and cleanse the air.

Carrier continued to refine his technology through many stages of development. In 1906, he was granted a patent for an Apparatus for Treating Air. This was the world's first spray-type air conditioning equipment. The machine worked by using water to either humidify or dehumidify the air. To make the air wetter, the machine heated the water. To make the air drier, the machine cooled the water. During this time, Carrier discovered a mathematical principle. He found that constant dew-point depression provided nearly constant relative humidity. This became known as the "law of constant dew-point depression."

To make these machines work perfectly, Carrier needed complex math. In 1911, he presented a famous document to the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. This paper was titled "Rational Psychrometric Formulae." It is often called the "Magna Carta of Psychrometrics." Psychrometrics is the study of gas-vapor mixtures, like air and water vapor. His formulas linked relative humidity, absolute humidity, and dew-point temperature. This allowed engineers to design systems that fit specific needs exactly. He later filed a patent for an automatic control system based on these ideas in 1907.

Carrier's professional journey involved several major companies and shifts. He started as a research engineer for the Buffalo Forge Company. In 1908, a subsidiary called the Carrier Air Conditioner Company of America was formed. However, World War I changed things for his employer. In 1915, seven young engineers decided to start their own business. They pooled $32,600 of their personal savings to form the Carrier Engineering Corporation. These men included Carrier, J. Irvine Lyle, Edward T. Murphy, L. Logan Lewis, Ernest T. Lyle, Frank Sanna, Alfred E. Stacey Jr., and Edmund P. Heckel.

The company faced many challenges, including the Great Depression. After the Wall Street Crash in 1929, many businesses struggled financially. In 1930, Carrier Engineering Corp. merged with two other companies. These were the Brunswick-Kroeschell Company and the York Heating & Ventilating Corporation. This merger created the Carrier Corporation. Willis Carrier became the chairman of the board. In 1937, he moved the company headquarters to Syracuse, New York. The company grew to become one of the largest employers in that region.

Carrier's legacy is visible in almost every modern city. His company helped expand air conditioning to homes and large buildings. This allowed industrial production to stay high even during hot summer months. The company also expanded internationally. In 1930, Carrier started Toyo Carrier and Samsung Applications in Japan and Korea. Today, South Korea is the largest producer of air conditioning in the world. The Carrier Corporation remains a global leader in the HVAC industry. In 2018, the company reported sales of $18.6 billion and employed 53,000 people.

Willis Carrier's life was marked by both scientific success and personal milestones. He was born in 1876 in Angola, New York. He studied at Cornell University and earned a Master of Engineering in 1901. He was married three times and had one biological child, Howard Carter Willis. He also adopted two children, Vernon and Earl. Carrier died on October 7, 1950, at Cornell Medical Center. He was buried in Forest Lawn Cemetery in Buffalo. His scientific contributions earned him many honors, including induction into the National Inventors Hall of Fame. Syracuse University even named a specialized environmental lab in his honor.
