A canard is a small wing placed in front of a main wing.

The name comes from the French word for duck. This is because early planes looked like a duck with its neck out.

The Wright brothers used a canard on the Wright Flyer in 1903. They wanted the plane to be easier to control. They hoped the design would keep the pilot safe during a stall. A stall is when a plane loses its lift. However, these early designs were hard to keep steady. Most designers chose to put wings in the back instead. This was the more common way to build planes for a long time.

New technology changed things in the 1960s. Computers now help pilots fly with fly-by-wire systems. This means computers help control the plane's movements. These tools make canards much easier to use. They help planes turn quickly and stay steady. The Saab Viggen was the first modern jet to use this design.

Today, many fast fighter jets use canards to fly well.
