Planes have special parts on their wings called spoilers.

These parts are hinged plates. They move up into the air. This makes the air push against them. This push is called drag.

Spoilers help a plane in two ways. First, they help a plane go down faster. This is helpful when a pilot wants to land. Second, they stop the wing from lifting. This is called dumping lift.

When a plane lands, it uses ground spoilers. These parts pop up all the way. This makes the plane press down on its wheels. It helps the brakes work better without skidding. Some planes even use spoilers to help turn. These are called spoilerons. They lift one wing to help the plane roll.

Most big jet planes use these parts every day. They make landing much safer for everyone.
