An aileron is a small, moving part on a plane's wing.

The name comes from a French word meaning "little wing."

These parts are hinged on the back edge of each wing. They work in pairs to help the plane tilt. This tilting movement is called rolling or banking.

When the plane tilts, its flight path changes.

Many people worked on these ideas. A scientist named Matthew Boulton wrote about them in 1864. He even got a patent for them in 1868. Later, the Wright brothers and Glenn Curtiss had a long legal fight. The Wrights used a way called wing warping to tilt their planes. This means they bent the whole wing.

Ailerons became more popular because they are very effective. They also do not make the wing structure weak. By 1915, most single-wing planes used them. Today, they are a standard part of how planes fly.
