Leading-edge slat

Planes use special parts on the front of their wings. These parts are called slats.

When a plane flies fast, the slats stay flat against the wing. This helps the plane move through the air easily.

But planes need help when they fly slowly. During takeoff and landing, the pilot moves the slats forward. This creates a small gap or slot.

Air flows through this gap. This helps the wing work better at a high angle of attack. An angle of attack is how much the wing tilts up. Using slats helps prevent a stall. A stall is when a plane loses its lift.

There are different kinds of slats. Some are automatic. They use springs to pop out when the plane slows down. Other slats are powered. Pilots control these with electricity or hydraulics. Some planes even have fixed slats that never move. These are used on special planes that fly very slowly.
