Elevator (aeronautics)

technology Maturity 11-13 Next article →

An elevator is a part of an airplane that helps it fly. It controls the pitch of the aircraft. Pitch is how the nose moves up or down. This is a very important job for any pilot.

The elevator changes the angle of the wing. This change affects how much lift the wing makes. Without elevators, a pilot could not steer the plane up or down.

How does it work? Most elevators are hinged to a horizontal stabilizer at the back. The stabilizer usually pushes down to keep the plane balanced. When the pilot moves the elevator up, it increases this downward force. This forces the tail down and the nose up. At a constant speed, this makes the wing lift more. The plane then moves upward.

If the elevator moves down, the tail rises. This makes the nose go down and the plane moves downward.

Many different types of planes use different designs. Some early planes had elevators in the front. These are called canards, which is the French word for duck. The Wright Brothers used this type of design.

Other planes use a tandem wing design. The Rutan Quickie is an example of this. Some modern planes, like the Grumman X-29, have elevators in both the front and the back.

Different speeds require different parts. Fast planes that fly at supersonic speeds often use a stabilator. This is an all-moving tailplane. It is used because shock waves can make regular hinged elevators less effective.

Some planes, called delta winged aircraft, use something called an elevon. An elevon combines the jobs of ailerons and elevators into one part. On slower planes, a pilot might use a small trim tab. This is a tiny part on the elevator that helps keep the plane steady.

Scientists are always looking for new ways to build better planes. They want to make parts that are lighter and cheaper. One idea is using flexible wings. The NASA X-53 Active Aeroelastic Wing is one such project.

Another idea is called fluidics. This uses small jets of air to change how the plane moves. This could make parts much simpler and even cheaper to build.
