Monoplane

A monoplane is a type of aircraft with just one main wing.

This design is very special because it is efficient. It has the lowest drag of any wing type. Drag is the force that tries to slow a plane down. Because they have less drag, monoplanes can fly very well. They are also the simplest kind of plane to build. Most planes you see in the sky today are monoplanes.

How a monoplane works depends on its wing structure. Many use a cantilever wing to stay strong. A cantilever wing carries all its strength inside itself. To fly fast, these wings must be thin. Thin wings can be heavy because they need extra strength. Some planes use external bracing like wires or struts to help. This bracing makes the plane lighter and easier to fly. However, those extra wires create more drag and slow the plane down.

Engineers place wings in different spots on the fuselage, which is the body of the plane. A low wing sits near the bottom.

This helps the pilot see upward and makes the plane easier to steer. A mid wing is mounted in the middle of the body.

This is the most common choice for large passenger planes. A shoulder wing sits near the top. A high wing sits right on top of the body. A parasol wing is held above the body by poles or struts.

Monoplanes have a long history in aviation. The first plane made for production was the 1907 Santos-Dumont Demoiselle.

In 1909, the Blériot XI flew across the English Channel. Later, the Junkers J 1 used all-metal parts in 1915. During World War I, many planes were biplanes with two wings. This was because early engines were not very powerful. Monoplanes were often too heavy or hard to steer back then. By the 1930s, monoplanes finally became the standard design.

You can see how different wings change a plane's job. A high wing makes it easier to load cargo from the ground. This is why many military cargo planes use them. A parasol wing is great for flying boats. It keeps the engines high above the water spray.

This was used on planes like the Consolidated PBY Catalina. Today, even the fastest jet and rocket planes are monoplanes. They use the single-wing design to reach amazing speeds.
