Hang gliding is a thrilling way to experience the sky.

Pilots fly a light aircraft called a hang glider. This craft has a fixed wing but no motor. Most modern wings use an aluminum alloy or composite frame. This frame is covered in a strong, synthetic sailcloth. This cloth is often made of woven polyester or laminated film. The material must stay very tight to keep its shape. This shape helps the glider move through the air smoothly.

To fly, the pilot must be very active. They sit or hang in a harness attached to the frame.

Most gliders use a triangle-shaped frame called an A-frame. The pilot steers by shifting their body weight. They move their weight in the opposite direction of a control bar. This movement tells the glider which way to turn. Pilots can also launch in different ways. Some run down a hill to take off on foot. Others are towed by a boat, a car, or even a plane.

People have been trying to fly for a long time.

In 1853, George Cayley invented a glider that was launched from a slope. Early designs were often unsafe because people did not understand bird wings. In the 1890s, Otto Lilienthal built gliders that he could control. He used weight shifting just like modern pilots do. In 1904, Jan Lavezzari flew a glider with a double sail in France.

Later, Octave Chanute showed off gliders that had tails.

A huge change came with the Rogallo wing.

In 1948, Francis and Gertrude Rogallo applied for a patent for a flexible wing. NASA even tested these wings in 1957 to help space capsules return to Earth. In 1963, John W. Dickenson made a modern version of the glider. He won a special diploma for this invention. Since then, the Rogallo wing has been very popular. It is simple to build and lands very gently.

Safety is a very important part of the sport today.

Early pioneers had a hard time because they learned by trial and error. Now, most pilots take official courses to learn the right way. They learn to check the weather and avoid bad winds. Pilots also wear helmets and carry parachutes in their harnesses. They might also carry radios or first-aid kits. Following these rules makes hang gliding much safer than it used to be.
