It was the first jetliner made by Boeing Commercial Airplanes. This plane was very important because it helped start the Jet Age. It became a huge success for passenger travel. Many people used it for long trips across the ocean. It helped make Boeing a leading maker of airplanes.

This plane works using four engines hanging under its wings. These are called podded engines. The first models used Pratt & Whitney JT3C turbojet engines. Later models used better engines called turbofans. A turbofan is a type of engine that uses less fuel.

The wings on the 707 are swept back at 35 degrees. This shape helps the plane fly fast. The wings also hold the fuel for the trip.

Boeing built the 707 based on a test plane. This test plane was called the 367-80 or the "Dash 80."

The very first 707 flew on December 20, 1957. Pan Am began regular service on October 26, 1958. Boeing wanted a new name for their jet planes. They chose the 700-series to show they were different from old propeller planes. They picked 707 because it sounded better than 700.

There were many different versions of this airplane. The 707-120B could carry 174 people in one class.

The longer 707-320 series had larger wings and was longer. Some models were even made for cargo. These were called the 707-320C convertible models. In total, Boeing made 865 of the 707 planes. They also made 154 smaller planes called the 720.

The 707's design changed as engineers learned more. The swept wings could cause a shaky motion called a Dutch roll. This motion makes the plane roll and turn at the same time.

To fix this, Boeing added a yaw damper to keep the plane steady. They also added a taller tail fin to help. These changes made the plane much safer to fly. You can still see the 707's influence in modern planes like the 737 and 757.
