The de Havilland DH.106 Comet was a groundbreaking aircraft. It was the world's very first commercial jet airliner.

This plane changed how people traveled across the sky. It was designed by the de Havilland company in the United Kingdom. Before this, most planes used propellers to fly. The Comet used jet engines instead. This made the flight feel very new and exciting for passengers. It was a huge step forward for aviation history.

How did the Comet work so differently? The plane had a very clean design to move through the air easily.

It featured four de Havilland Ghost turbojet engines. These engines were tucked into the wing roots. The plane also had a pressurized cabin. This kept the air inside comfortable at high altitudes. Passengers enjoyed large windows to see the world below. The flight was much smoother and quieter than older propeller planes.

The story of the Comet began with a special group. In 1943, the United Kingdom formed the Brabazon Committee. Their job was to plan for new airliners after the war.

Sir Geoffrey de Havilland led the push for a jet design. He believed jet engines could work for long trips. In 1945, the committee gave de Havilland a contract for the Type 106. A design team led by Ronald Bishop started the work in 1946. They even tested experimental designs like the tailless DH 108. Eventually, they chose a more reliable wing shape.

Early testing was very important for this new technology.

Engineers used a large water tank to test the plane's strength. They wanted to see how the metal handled pressure. They tested the fuselage for metal fatigue, which is when metal weakens over time. They ran over 16,000 cycles of pressure to be sure. The first prototype made its maiden flight on July 27, 1949. It flew for 31 minutes from Hatfield Aerodrome.

Later, the Comet 4 series arrived in 1958 and flew until 1981.

Even though the Comet faced hard times, it left a big legacy. Three early Comets were lost in accidents. Some crashes were caused by metal fatigue or bad weather.

Engineers learned how to fix these design flaws. They made the plane much stronger for future flights. Other plane makers learned from these lessons too. Some Comets even became military planes like the Hawker Siddeley Nimrod. That version served the Royal Air Force until 2011. The Comet's journey lasted over 60 years after its first flight.
