This means it was the first jet plane built for passengers. The first prototype flew in 1949. It had four jet engines built into the wings.

Flying on a Comet felt very new. It was much smoother and quieter than older planes.

Passengers had large windows to see the view. They even had seats that could lean back to rest. The plane had a galley to serve food and drinks.

Early models had some big problems. Three planes were lost in accidents. Some crashes happened because of metal fatigue. This is when metal gets weak from being used many times.

Other planes had trouble during bad weather. Engineers found flaws in the design. They saw that square cut-outs for antennas caused stress.

De Havilland fixed these issues. They made the plane much stronger. The new Comet 4 flew from 1958 until 1981.

Some versions even served in the military for many years.
