The Tornado is a fast plane.
It has wings that can move. This helps it fly well.
Three lands helped build it. These are Italy, Germany, and the United Kingdom. They worked as a team.
Many planes were made. There were 990 planes in all. They fly in many ways. They can fly low to the ground.
Some planes fly to find things. Other planes fly to protect the air. They have been used in many wars.
This plane was first built a long time ago. It first flew in 1974. It is a very special plane.
The Panavia Tornado is a special kind of jet.
It is a multi-role aircraft. This means it can do many different jobs. Some versions fly low to strike targets. Others find things or protect the air.
Three countries worked together to build it. These are Italy, Germany, and the United Kingdom. They formed a group called Panavia Aircraft GmbH.
Italy made the wings. Germany made the middle part. The United Kingdom made the front and the tail. They also made the engines together.
The Tornado has a very cool feature. It has variable-sweep wings. This means the wings can move. They can change shape while the plane flies. This helps the plane fly fast or fly well.
Many Tornados were built. There were 990 planes in total. The first one flew in 1974. They began to fly for work in 1979. The Tornado has been used in many wars. It has flown in the Gulf War and the Iraq War. It has also been used in Libya and Syria.
The Panavia Tornado is a special family of combat aircraft.
It is known as a multi-role plane. This means it can do many different jobs. There are three main versions of the plane. The Tornado IDS is a fighter-bomber used for strikes. The Tornado ECR handles electronic combat and reconnaissance. Finally, the Tornado ADV is an interceptor used for air defence.
Because it can do so much, it replaced many different types of planes.
The plane works using a clever design called variable-sweep wings.
This allows the wings to change their shape while flying. Designers wanted the plane to be very fast. They also wanted it to be easy to steer. Straight wings help a plane fly well at lower speeds. Swept-back wings help a plane fly much faster. By moving the wings, the Tornado can do both.
This makes the aircraft very useful for different missions.
Three nations worked together to create this aircraft.
The United Kingdom, West Germany, and Italy formed a group called Panavia Aircraft GmbH. They shared the hard job of building the plane. The United Kingdom built the front and the tail. West Germany built the middle part of the plane. Italy was responsible for making the wings. They also formed a separate company called Turbo-Union. This group worked together to build the RB199 engines.
The history of the Tornado began many years ago.
The very first Tornado flew on 14 August 1974. It first flew in a place called Manching, Germany. The aircraft entered service between 1979 and 1980. In total, 990 of these aircraft were built. The Royal Saudi Air Force was the only other country to buy them.
This shows how many different people wanted to use the plane.
You might recognize the Tornado from history books.
The plane was used in the Gulf War in 1991. It also flew in the Bosnian War and the Kosovo War. It saw action in the Iraq War and the Libya civil war. The Tornado has even flown in Syria, Yemen, and Afghanistan. It is a very famous jet in the world of aviation.
Even today, people study how these planes work.
The Panavia Tornado is a versatile family of twin-engine combat aircraft.
It is classified as a multi-role aircraft, meaning it can perform many different military tasks. This design allowed it to replace several different types of older aircraft within the air forces that used it. The Tornado was developed through a massive international partnership. This partnership included the United Kingdom, West Germany, and Italy. Together, they formed a company called Panavia Aircraft GmbH to manage the project.
This collaboration allowed different nations to combine their engineering strengths to create a single, powerful machine.
The aircraft is famous for its variable-sweep wing design.
This mechanism allows the wings to move during flight to change the plane's shape. In the 1960s, designers wanted the benefits of two different wing styles. Straight wings provide great maneuverability and efficiency during low-speed flight. Swept-back wings allow an aircraft to reach much higher speeds. By using variable geometry, the Tornado can switch between these two states. This makes the aircraft efficient for both cruising and high-speed combat.
This technology was a key goal for the designers who wanted a multi-purpose jet.
There are three primary variants of the Tornado, each built for a specific mission. The first is the Tornado IDS, which stands for interdictor/strike. This version acts as a fighter-bomber. The second is the Tornado ECR, which is used for electronic combat and reconnaissance.
This version helps manage electronic warfare and gathering information. The third is the Tornado ADV, or air defence variant. This version serves as an interceptor to protect airspace. Each variant uses the same basic design but is specialized for different combat roles.
The history of the Tornado began with several failed or cancelled projects. In 1965, the United Kingdom cancelled the BAC TSR-2 project. In 1967, they also cancelled the purchase of the US General Dynamics F-111K. Britain had previously worked on a project called the AFVG with France.
However, France withdrew from that project in 1967. To find a replacement, a working group formed in 1968. This group included West Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, Italy, and Canada. They wanted to create a Multi Role Combat Aircraft, or MRCA. Eventually, the United Kingdom, West Germany, and Italy signed an agreement in 1969 to move forward.
Building the Tornado required a complex division of labor among the partner nations. The United Kingdom and West Germany each held a 42.5% stake in the workload. Italy held the remaining 15% of the production work.
The British company, BAC, built the front fuselage and the tail assembly. The West German company, MBB, manufactured the center fuselage. Italy's Aeritalia was responsible for building the wings. To power the jet, a separate company called Turbo-Union was formed in 1970. This company produced the RB199 engines, with ownership split between Rolls-Royce, MTU, and FIAT.
Testing the aircraft revealed several technical challenges that engineers had to solve. The first flight took place on 14 August 1974, in Manching, Germany. During flight tests, engineers found that airflow disturbances caused issues at supersonic speeds. They had to re-profile the fuselage and engine intakes to stop this.
They also discovered safety issues with the engines at high altitudes. When trying to slow down at high altitudes, the engines could suffer from violent vibrations. To prevent this, the engine controls were designed to increase the minimum idle setting. Additionally, engineers had to add a nose-wheel steering system to help the plane stay stable when using thrust reversers during landing.
The Tornado has a significant history of active service in many conflicts. A total of 990 aircraft were built across all variants.
The aircraft was used by the Royal Air Force, the Italian Air Force, and the Royal Saudi Air Force. It played a major role in the 1991 Gulf War, where it performed low-altitude strike missions. It was also used in the Bosnian War, the Kosovo War, and the Iraq War. The aircraft saw service during the 2011 Libyan civil war and in smaller roles in Syria, Yemen, and Afghanistan. Notably, the Tornado is the only non-American aircraft currently approved by NATO to carry United States nuclear weapons.
