This mechanism allows the wings to move during flight to change the plane's shape. In the 1960s, designers wanted the benefits of two different wing styles. Straight wings provide great maneuverability and efficiency during low-speed flight. Swept-back wings allow an aircraft to reach much higher speeds. By using variable geometry, the Tornado can switch between these two states. This makes the aircraft efficient for both cruising and high-speed combat. This technology was a key goal for the designers who wanted a multi-purpose jet.

There are three primary variants of the Tornado, each built for a specific mission. The first is the Tornado IDS, which stands for interdictor/strike. This version acts as a fighter-bomber. The second is the Tornado ECR, which is used for electronic combat and reconnaissance.

This version helps manage electronic warfare and gathering information. The third is the Tornado ADV, or air defence variant. This version serves as an interceptor to protect airspace. Each variant uses the same basic design but is specialized for different combat roles.

The history of the Tornado began with several failed or cancelled projects. In 1965, the United Kingdom cancelled the BAC TSR-2 project. In 1967, they also cancelled the purchase of the US General Dynamics F-111K. Britain had previously worked on a project called the AFVG with France.

However, France withdrew from that project in 1967. To find a replacement, a working group formed in 1968. This group included West Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, Italy, and Canada. They wanted to create a Multi Role Combat Aircraft, or MRCA. Eventually, the United Kingdom, West Germany, and Italy signed an agreement in 1969 to move forward.

Building the Tornado required a complex division of labor among the partner nations. The United Kingdom and West Germany each held a 42.5% stake in the workload. Italy held the remaining 15% of the production work.

The British company, BAC, built the front fuselage and the tail assembly. The West German company, MBB, manufactured the center fuselage. Italy's Aeritalia was responsible for building the wings. To power the jet, a separate company called Turbo-Union was formed in 1970. This company produced the RB199 engines, with ownership split between Rolls-Royce, MTU, and FIAT.

Testing the aircraft revealed several technical challenges that engineers had to solve. The first flight took place on 14 August 1974, in Manching, Germany. During flight tests, engineers found that airflow disturbances caused issues at supersonic speeds. They had to re-profile the fuselage and engine intakes to stop this. They also discovered safety issues with the engines at high altitudes. When trying to slow down at high altitudes, the engines could suffer from violent vibrations. To prevent this, the engine controls were designed to increase the minimum idle setting. Additionally, engineers had to add a nose-wheel steering system to help the plane stay stable when using thrust reversers during landing.

The Tornado has a significant history of active service in many conflicts. A total of 990 aircraft were built across all variants.

The aircraft was used by the Royal Air Force, the Italian Air Force, and the Royal Saudi Air Force. It played a major role in the 1991 Gulf War, where it performed low-altitude strike missions.
