The Douglas DC-3 is a famous propeller-driven airliner.

It changed the airline industry forever. This plane was much better than older aircraft. It was fast and very reliable. It could also carry passengers in great comfort.

The DC-3 was a huge success. In 1939, about 90% of all airline flights used it. This plane helped make air travel popular across the United States. It even helped replace trains for long trips.

This metal plane works using two radial piston engines.

These engines spin large propellers to move the aircraft through the air. Early civilian models used the Wright R-1820 Cyclone engine. Later models often used the Pratt & Whitney R-1830 Twin Wasp engine. The plane can carry 21 to 32 passengers at once.

It can also carry 6,000 lb of cargo. The DC-3 is strong enough to fly from short runways. This makes it very useful for many different places.

Engineers worked hard to design this plane.

It started as a project to help airlines compete. A man named C. R. Smith from American Airlines spoke with Donald Douglas. He wanted a plane with beds for sleeping. A team led by Arthur E. Raymond worked for two years on the design. The first prototype, called the DST, flew on December 17, 1935. This was the same day as the 32nd anniversary of the Wright brothers' flight.

Many different versions of the DC-3 were built.

Only 607 civilian planes were made. However, military versions were built in much larger numbers. These included the C-47 Skytrain and the Dakota. In total, over 16,000 planes were produced. Some were built in the Soviet Union as the Lisunov Li-2. Others were built in Japan as the L2D Type 0.

Production reached its highest point in 1944 with 4,853 planes delivered that year.

Even though newer planes were built, the DC-3 stayed useful.

After World War II, many cheap military planes became available for airlines. Some people even changed the engines to newer turbine types. In 2013, about 2,000 versions were still flying. By 2017, more than 300 were still in the air. As of 2023, about 150 were still flying. They still do special jobs today. Some even fly on water using special floats.
