While the DST was a success, the DC-3 was developed to offer even more flexibility. The DC-3 could be configured to carry 21 to 32 passengers or up to 6,000 lb of cargo. 
The history of the DC-3 is rooted in intense corporate competition. In the early 1930s, Transcontinental and Western Airlines (TWA) sought a way to compete with United Airlines. United was using the Boeing 247, but Boeing refused to sell that model to any other airlines. This forced TWA to approach Donald Douglas for a new design. A pivotal moment occurred during a marathon telephone call between American Airlines CEO C. R. Smith and Donald Douglas. Smith persuaded Douglas to build a sleeper aircraft to replace the aging Curtiss Condor II biplanes. 
Production numbers for the DC-3 reveal its massive global presence. While only 607 civilian variants were manufactured, the total production reached over 16,000 when including military versions. 
The DC-3's significance is highlighted by its ability to make air travel profitable. Before its arrival, many airlines relied on government mail subsidies to survive. The DC-3 was one of the first airliners that could turn a profit carrying only passengers. It revolutionized travel times across the United States. An eastbound flight could cross the country from New York to Los Angeles in just 18 hours with three stops. 
Even after newer aircraft like the Douglas DC-4 and Convair 240 made the DC-3 obsolete on major routes, it remained useful. Many surplus military C-47s were converted back into civilian cargo and passenger planes. Some owners even performed advanced modifications, such as installing turboprop engines.
