These planes are very important because they are the best-selling airliners ever built. They belong to a group of different sizes that all work in similar ways. This family changed how people fly across the world. Many airlines use them to carry passengers every single day. They are known for being reliable and very useful for travel.

These planes work using very smart technology. They were the first airliners to use digital fly-by-wire. This means that computers help the pilot control the flight. They also use side-stick controls instead of old-fashioned steering wheels.

The planes use powerful turbofan engines to move through the air. Most models use CFM56 or IAE V2500 engines to fly. Newer models, called the A320neo, use even better engines. These new engines help the plane save up to 15% more fuel. They also use sharklets, which are special parts on the wing tips.

People have been working on these planes for a long time. The A320 programme officially started in March 1984. The very first plane flew for the first time on 22 February 1987.

Air France was the first airline to use them in April 1988. Before this, engineers worked on many different ideas for single-aisle planes. A group called the JET programme helped create the ideas used here. This work happened in places like the United Kingdom and France.
