The Airbus A320 family is a highly successful series of narrow-body airliners.

These aircraft are recognized as the best-selling airliner family ever built. They serve a vital role in global aviation by connecting many different regions. The family includes several models of varying lengths and capacities.

This variety allows airlines to choose the right size for their specific routes. The A320 series has fundamentally changed how commercial aircraft are designed and operated.

A major technological breakthrough for the A320 was the introduction of digital fly-by-wire systems.

In older planes, mechanical cables connected the cockpit to the flight surfaces. In the A320, electronic signals travel through wires to move the wings and tail. This system uses side-stick flight controls instead of a traditional large steering wheel. These computers help manage the aircraft's movements during flight. This innovation made flying more precise and efficient for pilots.

The family consists of four distinct aircraft variants.

The A321 is the largest and longest model. It can accommodate between 185 and 230 passengers. The standard A320 is the middle model, carrying 150 to 186 people.

The A319 is a shorter version that holds 124 to 156 passengers.

Finally, the A318 is the shortest variant. It typically carries between 107 and 132 passengers. These models use different engines to meet their specific needs.

The history of the A320 began with the Joint European Transport (JET) programme.

This project was established in June 1977. It involved partners like British Aerospace, Aerospatiale, Dornier, and Fokker. Engineers originally studied different designs, such as the JET2 concept. These studies eventually evolved into the Single-Aisle (SA) studies led by Derek Brown. The A320 programme was officially launched on March 2, 1984. The first prototype completed its maiden flight on February 22, 1987.

Air France became the first customer to enter commercial service in April 1988.

Manufacturing the A320 family happens in several locations around the world. Final assembly takes place in Toulouse, France. It also occurs in Hamburg, Germany. Since 2009, assembly has been done in Tianjin, China. In April 2016, a new line opened in Mobile, Alabama, in the United States.

The A321 variant required its own production line in Germany. This was the first time Airbus used a second location for assembly. This expansion helped Airbus meet the massive global demand for these aircraft.

The A320 family is a massive presence in the sky today. There are currently 11,760 units in service globally. More than 375 different operators use these planes.

For example, American Airlines operates 487 aircraft from this family. The airline IndiGo has 930 aircraft on order. In total, 19,711 aircraft have been ordered, with 12,512 already delivered. The fleet has completed over 176 million flights. These planes have also flown more than 328 million block hours. This scale shows how much the world relies on the A320.

Recent developments have focused on making the planes even more efficient.

In December 2010, Airbus announced the A320neo, which stands for "new engine option." This version entered service with Lufthansa in January 2016. The A320neo uses more efficient turbofan engines. It also features "sharklets," which are specialized wingtip devices.

These improvements allow the aircraft to use up to 15% less fuel. The older versions with previous engines are now called the A320ceo. This evolution helps airlines reduce costs and environmental impact.
