The Airbus A380 is a massive wide-body airliner.

It stands as the largest passenger airliner in the world. This jet is special because it is the only one with two full decks.

These two floors allow the plane to carry a huge number of people. A typical setup has seating for 525 passengers. However, the plane has a maximum certified capacity of 853 passengers.

This giant aircraft was built to move many people at once.

Building the A380 was a very complex thing that happened in many steps. Different parts were made in France, Germany, Spain, and the United Kingdom.

Because the parts were so huge, they could not use normal roads easily. Airbus used a special path called the Itinéraire à Grand Gabarit. They moved parts using special ships, barges, and even a large plane called the Beluga.

Once the parts arrived in Toulouse, France, workers put them together in a large hall. The plane uses four turbofan engines to fly.

These engines are either the Engine Alliance GP7200 or the Rolls-Royce Trent 900.

Airbus engineers began studying this project in 1988.

A leader named Jean Roeder headed the secret work on this high-capacity plane. The project was first announced at the 1990 Farnborough Airshow. At that time, the plane was called the A3XX project. Airbus wanted to compete with the Boeing 747, which was the leader in the market.

In 1994, they announced a plan to develop the A3XX. Finally, on 19 December 2000, the official A380 programme was launched.

The first prototype was shown in Toulouse on 18 January 2005.

It took its very first flight on 27 April 2005. The plane had some hard jobs during its testing phase. Electrical wiring issues caused a two-year delay in production.

This also caused the development costs to almost double. Singapore Airlines became the first customer to receive a plane on 15 October 2007.

Production of the aircraft eventually ended in 2021.

You might know other large planes that fly people across the ocean. The A380 is part of a system where large planes fly between major hubs.

This is different from smaller planes that fly directly between small cities. The A380 was designed to work with this hub system. Even though it was very expensive to build, it has flown many times. The global fleet has completed over 800,000 flights.
