technology Maturity 11-13 Next article →

The Boeing 777 is a famous long-range airplane. Many people call it the "Triple Seven." It is a wide-body airliner, which means the body is very wide inside. This plane is the largest twinjet in the world. It is also the most-built wide-body airliner ever made.

It was built to fill a gap between smaller and larger Boeing planes. The 777 can carry between 301 and 368 passengers in a typical three-class layout.

You can recognize it by its huge engines and its six wheels on each main landing gear.

Designing this plane was a very special way of working. Boeing did not design it alone in a room. Instead, eight major airlines joined the project to help. This group was called the "Working Together" group.

They wanted a plane with a flexible interior and lower costs. Boeing also used a computer-aided design, or CAD, process for the first time. This meant engineers used 3D software to build the plane virtually on a computer. This helped them make sure all the thousands of parts fit perfectly before they even started building.

The history of the 777 started in the late 1980s. Boeing launched the program in October 1990. United Airlines was the first customer to place a big order.

The first prototype aircraft rolled out in April 1994. It took its very first flight in June 1994. Chief test pilot John E. Cashman was in command for that maiden flight. After many months of testing, the plane was ready for passengers. United Airlines began flying the 777 commercially in June 1995.

There are many different versions of the 777. The original models were called the 777 Classics. These included the 777-200, the 777-200ER, and the 777-300.

Later, Boeing made second-generation planes like the 777-300ER and the 777F freighter. The 777-300ER is the best-selling version of the plane.

The 777X is expected to start deliveries in 2027.

The 777 is a huge part of how we travel today. Over 2,300 aircraft have been ordered by customers. More than 70 different operators use these planes all over the world.

Emirates is the largest operator with a fleet of 163 aircraft. The 777 was also the first Boeing plane to use fly-by-wire controls. This system uses electronic signals to help the pilots fly the plane. This technology is now used in many other modern aircraft. It helps make long flights across oceans much easier for airlines.
