The word Zakat comes from an Arabic root. It means to purify. Muslims believe giving Zakat purifies their wealth. It makes their possessions pleasing to God.

People give Zakat when they have extra money. They must have wealth above a minimum amount. This amount is called nisab.

Many Muslims pay 2.5% of their extra money. They often do this during the month of Ramadan. This is a holy month for Muslims.

The Quran lists eight groups of people who can receive Zakat.

These groups include the poor and the needy. They also include orphans and widows. Other groups are people in debt and travelers. Some funds help zakat collectors too.

In some countries, the state collects Zakat. In other places, it is a private act. Different scholars have different ideas about the rules. They may disagree on how much people should pay. Some also disagree on which goods are included.
