He lost his father when he was just a young child. His mother raised him with help from his father's family. To make money, he worked as a baker. He lived a very simple life on a small income. He even lived on just seventeen dirhams a month. He was happy with this simple way of living. He focused most of his time on learning and teaching.

As a young man, he studied with many different teachers. He learned the Qur'an and how to study law. He traveled across Arabia to collect more stories. He learned from 414 different traditionists during his travels. He also studied under a famous scholar named al-Shafi'i. Later in life, he became a judge. His students eventually started the Hanbali school of law. This school is still very important in places like Saudi Arabia and Qatar today.

During his life, he faced a hard time called the Mihna. This was a period when the Abbasid caliphs tried to change religious views. The caliph al-Ma'mun supported a view called the Mu'tazili doctrine. This doctrine said the Quran was created. Ahmad ibn Hanbal disagreed with this idea. He believed the Quran was the eternal word of God. Because he would not change his mind, he was put in prison. He was also punished by the ruler, al-Mu'tasim. His strength during this time made him very famous in history.

He died in Baghdad on August 2, 855. He was about 74 or 75 years old. His funeral was a massive event for the city. Historians say 800,000 men and 60,000 women attended. On that same day, 20,000 Christians and Jews joined the faith of Islam.
