A madhhab is a school of thought. It is a way of looking at Islamic law.

These schools help people understand how to live their faith.

In Sunni Islam, there are four main schools. They are the Hanafi, Maliki, Shafi'i, and Hanbali schools. These groups became strong in the ninth and tenth centuries. They are named after the scholars who started them. Each school has its own way of finding answers. For example, the Maliki school looks at the traditions of Medina.

Different schools are common in different parts of the world. The Maliki school is big in North and West Africa. The Hanafi school is common in South and Central Asia. The Shafi'i school is found in East Africa and Southeast Asia. The Hanbali school is mainly in North and Central Arabia.

There are other schools too. Some people follow Shia schools like the Ja'fari school. Others follow the Ibadi school, which is common in Oman. Some people do not belong to any madhhab at all. Today, many countries use state laws. These laws sometimes use ideas from many different schools at once.
