A fatwa is a legal ruling in Islamic law. It is a formal answer to a question. People ask these questions to learn about their faith. A person who gives the answer is called a mufti.

The person asking the question is called a mustafti. The act of giving the ruling is called ifta.

Long ago, muftis had many roles. They gave advice to judges in court. They also helped people with daily life. Some muftis were famous leaders. Others were simple scholars in small towns.

Most muftis had other jobs to earn money. They might trade goods or copy books. In theory, they gave their advice for free. This helped them stay fair and honest.

Some fatwas are very short. They might just say yes or no. Other fatwas are very long. They can be as big as a whole book.
